Reon van Tonder  Autobiography


Born in 1981 Reon grew up on his family’s farm in the Bushveld. He started his hunting career at the age of 4 armed with his slingshot.

During his childhood, he spent every possible moment in the bush.  Whether it was working on the farm or playing around, he learned about the animals, the land, the predators and the laws of hunting.  “Barefoot walk and stalk works best for me”

A very old PSE was Reons’ first bow, a gift from a nearby outfitter at the age of 12.

During his teens he hunted over 30 Kudus for meat and close to 50 warthogs.  He had the privilege and time to walk and stalk most of these kills.

Reon graduated from High school Ellisras in 1999 and completed his B. COM Education degree at the University of Pretoria in 2004.

2002-2004 He worked part time at THE BOW shop where he got firsthand knowledge on bow setup, arrows, broad heads, equipment etc.

In 2002 he saved up enough money to buy a Bow Tech Tomcat.

In 2004 he becomes a Professional hunter and his lifelong dream started to become a reality.

From 2004-2008 he was a full time free lance Professional hunter.

Reon and Elmay got married March 2008 and started African Barefoot Safaris in 2009

Reon hosted hundreds of clients and hunted every available specie all over South Africa

He guided and hunted game with crossbow, longbow, compound, rifles, handguns and even front loaders

Reons daughter Lane was born March 2011 and his son JJ in 2013

2014 Reon become lifetime member of SCI

2015 and 2016 Bow Tech professional Staff shooter in the hunter’s category

Currently owns and operates African Barefoot Safaris from the family owned bow hunt exclusive property as the outfitter but also as PH.



Elmay van Tonder

Elmay and Reon married in March 2008 and she joined the team beginning 2009.  Elmay has a B.Com Degree in Communications and Marketing.  She takes care off all the correspondence, trip planning, office management, marketing, video and photo editing.  

As host she takes care of the supplies in camp and any other needs you may have.  She is also responsible for any other activities that you or members of you group would like to take part in.


In March 2011 our little girl Lane joined the team and was followed by her brother JJ in January 2013.


All the staff members go out of their way to accommodate any and all of your special needs and request.  With regards to hunting or anything additional.  We have done an engagement (from designing and sourcing the ring) through to the champagne.  We hosted a 20th vow renewal fully catered, white dress and all.  Also been part of a few prank an numerous other laughing matters.  What happen at hunting camp stays at hunting camp. We would love to be part of helping you make some of the best memories of your life.


Observers will have a PH of their own (Professional Host)



Junior camp assistant

Junior has been working in the lodging industry for over 10 years.  She has been taking care of housekeeping

for over a decade and know how to keep the camp clean.  She take great care of all the laundry and ironing


She is also training to become the cook for African Barefoot Safaris.

She is dedicated and reliable.  Trying to master a new cooking or baking skill every day.

One day should would like to be in charge of the menu including breakfast, lunch, diner,  lunch boxes, deserts and snacks


She can speak English, Afrikaans and Sepedi,  Junior has 4 children aged 26 (girl), 22 (girls), 20 (boy), 3 (boy) and when she is not a camp stay in a Village about 20 min drive from the camp.



Tyler tracker/skinner

Tyler is an artist in his own right.  He knows the importance of skinning a trophy perfect every time.


Skinning for more than 8 years and over a 1000 animals he knows the difference between flat skin, full mount, scull & cape you name it.


He makes sure that the sculls are cleaned and your skins get chemically treated to prevent hair slip.
